Recycling

The Recycling Subcommittee adopted the following charge and goals for the duration of the term of the task force.

  • Create a comprehensive plan for a sustainable recycling program on campus, including residence halls, classroom, office and research buildings and other building types on campus.
  • Identify existing programs and find recycling solutions for what is recyclable on campus, including paper; postconsumer waste such as plastic, metal, glass and cardboard; compostables; ink and toner cartridges; computer equipment; withdrawn bound material (books, primarily from university libraries, that are discarded after their useful life); batteries; and light bulbs.
  • Identify the infrastructure necessary to support recycling for each building type.
  • Identify contractual obligations for vendors, and provide an education and promotion plan that will instill a necessary culture change.

Objectives
The Recycling Subcommittee’s objectives and goals are to

  • identify current recycling programs;
  • create a master plan for the university recycling program;
  • educate the community on our recycling program; and
  • identify a standard operating procedure for each building.

Recommendations

  • Establish a recycling infrastructure that allows for efficient movement of material and a space large enough to accommodate volumes of material that will offset the pickup cost.
  • Teach the campus community about recycling and develop a recycling unit that would generate 60 percent of its financial support in five years.
